Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, or RTF document file format.
  • Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  • The text is single-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines.

Author Guidelines

Archives of the History and Philosophy of Medicine welcomes original scholarly contributions dealing with the history, philosophy, and related social and cultural dimensions of medicine, medical sciences, healthcare, and the development of medical thought and practice. Submissions may include original research articles, historical studies, theoretical and philosophical papers, review articles, scholarly essays, source-based studies, and other contributions relevant to the journal’s scope. Manuscripts should present original work that has not been published previously and is not under consideration for publication elsewhere.

Manuscripts should be prepared in a clear and academically appropriate style. Authors should provide a concise and informative title, the full names and institutional affiliations of all authors, and the contact details of the corresponding author. An abstract should clearly state the purpose, principal arguments or findings, and conclusions of the paper, followed by appropriate keywords. The main text should be logically organized into suitable sections according to the nature of the submission. Historical and philosophical arguments should be supported by appropriate primary and secondary sources, and factual statements should be accurately documented.

Authors are responsible for ensuring that all sources cited in the manuscript are properly acknowledged. References should be complete, consistent, and presented according to the journal’s prescribed bibliographic style. Particular care should be taken with historical sources, archival materials, translated works, manuscripts, and other primary documents. Authors should verify the accuracy of names, dates, quotations, page numbers, publication details, and other bibliographic information before submission.

Where tables, figures, photographs, archival images, or other copyrighted materials are included, authors must ensure that they have the necessary permission for publication where required. All illustrations should be of suitable quality and clearly identified. Authors should provide captions and acknowledge the source of reproduced material. Any material taken from other publications or online resources must be properly cited.

All submitted manuscripts are subject to editorial assessment and, where appropriate, peer review. The editors may return manuscripts that fall outside the journal’s scope, fail to meet basic scholarly or formatting requirements, or do not provide sufficient academic contribution. Authors may be asked to revise their manuscripts in response to editorial or reviewer comments. Acceptance of a manuscript is based on its academic quality, originality, relevance to the journal, methodological or interpretive soundness, and compliance with ethical standards.

Authors must ensure that submitted manuscripts are original and free from plagiarism, fabrication, falsification, inappropriate duplication, and other forms of academic misconduct. Any substantial use of another author’s ideas, wording, data, images, or other material must be appropriately acknowledged. Authors should also disclose any potential conflicts of interest that could influence the research or its interpretation.

The use of artificial intelligence and other automated tools should not replace the intellectual and scholarly responsibility of the authors. Where AI-assisted tools have been used in preparing a manuscript, their use should be disclosed where relevant, particularly when they have contributed to analysis, translation, generation of text, or other substantive aspects of the work. Authors remain fully responsible for the accuracy, originality, citations, and scholarly integrity of the submitted manuscript.

Submission of a manuscript confirms that all listed authors have made a meaningful contribution to the work and have approved the submitted version. The corresponding author is responsible for communication with the editorial office and for ensuring that all authors agree with the submission and any subsequent revisions. Any changes in authorship after submission should be communicated to and approved by the editorial office.

By submitting a manuscript, authors agree to cooperate with the editorial and peer-review process and to respond to editorial or reviewer comments within the requested timeframe. Revised manuscripts should clearly indicate how the comments have been addressed. The final decision regarding publication rests with the editorial team in accordance with the journal’s editorial and peer-review policies.
